Eureka Moment at the Gym
I think I've come up with a idea to alleviate some of the power problems faced by this country. today at the gym, I noticed that one of the guys had walked 10 kilometers on the treadmill.
"Hey D, how much today?"
"10 KMs... I walked 10 KMs man."
"You did?"
"Yeah!! Look at the distance meter"
"Too bad you have nothing to show for it"
"WTF?"
"Well... had I walked 10 Kilometres, I would have been at my office by now."
"Ha Ha very funny, Arsehole"
I wrinkled my nose at the unpleasant boor and proceeded to select a pair of like sized dumbells to work the Shrugs that have given me the impressive shoulders that people like to cry on.
Somewhere near the 18th shrug, I had an eureka moment.
Suppose we could hook up all the treadmills, exercycles and cable based weight training machines to dynamos to produce electricity?
We could actually feed that energy back to a regional grid and light up a few homes.
Here's a better Idea... help solve energy and obesity problems at the same time.
Every gym member gets a swipe card that they swipe on the machine before they start their workout. The system calculates the total energy they have fed into the grid, and gives them an equal deduction on their monthly electry bill! More people will start going to the gym, and we will have a much healthier nation!
I'm working on a project proposal... I'll be sending it out to some VC firms in a day or two.

good train of thought!
Here's another idea, springing from your original observation about "If I had walked 10 km, I would be at the office by now." Those who wish "real treadmill"[TM] (or "the Earth is my treadmill"[TM]) workouts are taught how to "just walk to work!"(JWTW![TM]) -- it's "a new trend for a new century!"[TM]
Benefits:
1) as much aerobic benefit as a "confined treadmill" (aka a 20th century treadmill);
2) more scenic route!
3) no need to DRIVE (or take automotive transport) to work, thereby reducing greenhouse gases in the earth's atmosphere.
cheers,
d.i.
You idiot, you're doing 18+ shrugs in a set?
